Wake follows the character of Caitlin Decter, blind from birth, who undergoes a treatment that should enable her fully to see for the first time. Instead, the technology creates a sort of sixth sense, enabling her to see the web. In this world, she encounters an emerging consciousness which she decides to call ‘Webmind’. While she is trying to understand this consciousness, the government learns about it and sees it as a threat.
