In the future Earth, a nanotech engineer throws away his copy of the young girl’s interactive book, which then falls into the hands of 3-year-old Nell. The book guides Nell through her tumultuous life, education, and influences her perceptions of the world and society. Meanwhile, John Percival Hackworth, a member of the Neo-Victorian Primer design team, illegally copies the primer to create a modified version for a wealthy Lord. However, the copy ends up being delivered to Nell, and this unforeseen chain of events has monumental consequences in the Diamond Age. The story takes place in a future version of Earth where nanotechnology, social classes, and cultural movements define the landscape.
