Detective Tyador Borlu, a citizen of the fictional city-state of Besźel, is given the task of solving a murder mystery that leads him across the border to the twin city of Ul Qoma. The two cities exist in the same physical location but are perceived as separate by their citizens, who ‘unsee’ the other city. The premise focuses on the philosophical concept of mutually ignoring realities and the societal consequences from such a division.
