An alternate history novel by Robert Sobel, ‘For Want of a Nail’ presents a detailed, scholarly pseudo-history spanning two centuries, from the pivotal event in 1775 (American Revolutionary War) until 1971. Instead of the United States, it sees the development of a British-governed ‘Northern Confederation’ and an independent ‘Southern Confederation.’ The book is faux-scholarly, filled with footnotes, diverse sources, and varied perspectives.
