Biotech has replaced fossil fuels, but it’s also responsible for new plagues that ravage the population, and genetically modified organisms have unpredictable effects. In this setting, Anderson Lake is a calorie man for AgriGen in Thailand, trying to find new fruit variations. He comes across Emiko, a windup girl marked by her jerky movements, who has been discarded by her Japanese creator. She becomes embroiled in the dangerous politics of a country struggling to survive.
