The story follows Lovelace, a self-aware AI, and Pepper, a technical wizard. After waking up in a new body and not knowing anything about her previous existence, Lovelace is allowed by Pepper to live with her, in the hope to help her adapt to her new life as a humanoid. The narrative switches between the present, with Lovelace learning to navigate life, and the past, revealing Pepper’s life growing up as a genetically engineered slave and her eventual escape.
